If you’re planning a trip to Israel, an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or visa is required. Most Canadians only need to make a short online application for an ETA.

In this post, you’ll find details of entry requirements for Canadians, including rules on ETAs and other documents for traveling to Israel.

Do Canadians Need a Visa To Enter Israel?

The type of entry permit you need for Israel depends on why you’re visiting and how long you will stay. Here’s a breakdown of the key requirements:

  • Israel ETA: Visits of less than 90 days for tourism or business
  • Israel visa: Longer stays and other reasons for visiting

You can find more information on the permitted activities when visiting with an ETA further down in this post.

To get your approved ETA for Israel, you must complete the online application before you travel. It’s not possible to get your travel authorization on arrival.

The ETA application process is electronic — there’s no need to visit an Embassy. Once approved, your Travel Authorization is electronically linked to your passport.

The ETA is valid for the most common reasons for visiting Israel. Permitted activities include:

  • Tourism
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Religious pilgrimages or cultural events*
  • Sports competitions*
  • Studying on courses of less than 90 days
  • Business meetings and conferences
  • Transit

Some activities are prohibited for visitors with an ETA. These include:

  • Enrolling in a long-term academic course
  • Journalism or filmmaking without a permit

( * ) The usual permitted stay for Canadians with an ETA is 90 days. If you’re visiting for most sports or cultural events, you can stay for up to 30 days.
