Important Passport Photo Requirements

Photo paper

It’s important to check that your photo is printed on glossy photo paper. If it’s printed on non-glossy paper, matte paper, or colored paper, it will not be accepted. Unsuitable photo paper might lead to the rejection of your application.

Size

Generally, the photo size must be 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high. Make sure your photo meets these criteria before submitting it.

  • Size: 2 inches x 2 inches (5cm x 5cm)
  • Head size: Between 25mm and 35mm1

United Kingdom

  • Size: 35mm x 45mm
  • Head height: 29mm to 34mm from chin to crown

France

  • Size: 35mm x 45mm
  • Head size: 32mm-36mm, taking up 70-80% of the photo3

Germany

  • Size: 35mm x 45mm
  • Face must occupy 70-80% of the photo

Spain

  • Size: 35mm x 45mm
  • Head size: 26 mm-32 mm from chin to crown

Recent photo

You must take your photo within the last month to make sure it reflects your current appearance.

Background:

Keep your background simple. In addition, it should be:

  • Plain and even
  • Light gray or white
  • Free of shadows

Dark and uneven backgrounds will not be accepted.

Posture

Your photo posture must follow these basic rules:

  • Keep your head up and look forward. Don’t tilt or rotate it.
  • Both of your ears should be clearly visible. Make sure your hair doesn’t cover your ears or your eyes.

Facial expression

  • Maintain a neutral facial expression. Don’t smile and don’t express any other emotions.
  • Make sure your mouth is closed, and your face is relaxed.
  • Look straight at the camera

Requirements for passport photos for children

Children should be positioned in an adult-like manner, facing the camera with their heads straight. No other objects or people should be in the photo.

Digital Format

For online applications, the photo should be in JPG or JPEG format, with a file size typically less than 120 KB. The resolution should be a minimum of 600 DPI for digital photos.

Things to Avoid in Your Passport Picture

To make sure your photo meets all the standards, it’s important to avoid the following:

  • Wearing dark lenses.
  • Overexposed photo — "Red-eye" photos will be rejected.
  • Objects or other people in the image
  • Hats or head coverings unless religious
  • Jewelry and any excessive accessories
